Criminal Court Cases in Thurston County
Thurston County court records are divided by jurisdiction. Superior Court hears adult felony cases. Its criminal calendars use two assigned judges, and the County Clerk maintains the filed case record. That short walk crosses an important records line. A clerk in one building may not hold the file sought in the other. Start with the court name and cause number. If only an arresting agency is known, use the statewide court index to locate the filing court before asking for copies.

The Thurston County Clerk describes Odyssey as the free public route for Superior Court case and hearing data. Smart Search accepts a party name or a cause number. Advanced filters can narrow the location to Thurston Superior Court, select a case type or status, and set filing dates. Public results can show attorneys, charges, calendars, and hearings. They do not make every filed document free online.
A common name can yield more than one candidate. Compare the cause number, court, filing date, and charge rather than treating a name match as identity proof. Then use Clerk Documents or the clerk counter for the pleading, order, or judgment itself. An Odyssey status such as open or closed describes case management. It does not say guilty, dismissed, or acquitted.

The index updates on an approximate 24-hour cycle. Its own warning matters: an entry may be late, incomplete, or wrong, so the index cannot prove that no case exists or establish the final result.

Thurston County Clerk Copy Paths
Superior Court documents have three practical access paths. Public computers at the clerk's office allow inspection of public case types. Clerk Documents uses a free account, a cause-number search, a document list, a cart, payment, and an emailed download link. When a public item is absent from that service, email tcclerk@co.thurston.wa.us with the cause number, caption, and exact document name. The clerk can state the page count and price.
Noncertified hard copies cost $0.50 per page. Electronic noncertified copies cost $0.25 per page. A certified copy costs $5 for the first page and $1 for each added page of that document. Mail requests require a cashier's check or money order and a stamped return envelope. Personal checks are not accepted. Confidential material available to a party can require a Records Coordinator appointment, while sealed material is not open to the public.

What a Criminal Case File Contains
A Thurston County criminal case file records what prosecutors charged and what the court did. It can include the information or complaint, count-by-count charge status, hearing notices, motions, orders, docket entries, warrant or failure-to-appear activity, legal financial entries, and the judgment. Thurston County District Case Codes
District Court records use a different route. WebLink needs the exact case, citation, or cause number and the three-character arresting-agency code for a criminal or infraction matter. Codes may include WSP, THC, or LYP. A person who has only a name should first use Washington Courts to find the case number and court.
District Court WebLink may be incomplete and does not include the register of actions. When the sequence of events matters, submit the court's online request, mail its form to the Public Records Officer in Building 3, or complete a form at the counter. Certified copies cost $5 per document, and a proceeding CD costs $20. Administrative records use a separate email and fee schedule, so they should not be confused with a filed criminal case.
Criminal Case Stages in Thurston County
After a custodial felony arrest, the Thurston County prosecutor generally has 72 hours, measured as three business days, to file. That local filing window does not apply in the same way after release. A preliminary appearance addresses probable cause and release. Arraignment addresses the charge and plea, then the court may set pretrial, omnibus, and trial dates. A plea or trial can resolve counts in different ways. Sentencing follows a conviction, while a dismissal or acquittal ends the affected count without conviction.

The court file can branch. One count may be dismissed while another ends in a plea. A failure-to-appear entry or bench warrant concerns court process, not guilt. Thurston County Case Status Terms
Open and closed are easy to overread. They are administrative case statuses, not outcomes. A closed case might contain a conviction, dismissal, acquittal, or another resolution. Read each count separately and seek the filed order. Later vacation can change how an eligible Washington conviction is treated and reported, yet it does not always remove every historic docket reference. Olympia Court Records Moved
Olympia Municipal Court closed on February 4, 2026. The city's official transition notice routes filings, case data, payments, hearings, records, forms, and probation to Thurston County District Court. City prosecution, defense, and victim advocacy remain city functions. Lacey also directs municipal court users to county District Court services.
This change makes old counter instructions risky. A newer Olympia misdemeanor or city filing should be checked through District Court and the statewide index, not an obsolete city-court address. The transfer did not merge every record into one file. Police incident reports still belong to Olympia Police, while the court clerk holds the filed criminal case.
Access Rules for Case Records
Washington court access follows General Rule 31, which differs from the Public Records Act process used for executive agencies. Public access is the starting point, but confidential identifiers, sealed records, juvenile material, protected victim information, medical data, and other restricted content may be withheld or redacted. A missing online result can reflect delay, a search mismatch, limited public access, or a sealed matter. It is not proof that no case exists.

That level of detail helps staff distinguish a judgment from a docket, calendar, recording, or administrative record.
Thurston County Specialty Court Records
Thurston County has named paths that may make a docket look less linear than a standard plea or trial track. Superior Court operates DUI and Drug Court. District Court operates Mental Health Court and Veterans Court. The voluntary Thurston County Court Alternative Program, called TC-CAP, can route approved cases to community services. The county also describes automatic LEAD referrals for simple-possession cases.
These programs do not erase the need to read the filed case. Eligibility, participation, compliance, dismissal, and judgment are distinct events. Look for orders and count-level dispositions rather than guessing from a program name or a changed hearing schedule. The clerk's record, not the program label alone, shows the legal result.
